(CO)HABITATION
Le Corbusier Cultural Centre, Firminy, France
Children from France, Slovenia and Austria (re)discovered their cities, through the prism of migrations, emotions, laws, architecture and issues of common living.
The future scenarios of common living in urban and neo-rural areas vary from school to school:
FIRMINY, France
Participating schools: Ecole de La Tardive, Ecole du Stade, Collège Les Bruneaux, Collège Waldeck-Rousseau, Firminy, France
The Firminy Vert is one of Le Corbusier’s largest and most important groups of buildings in the world. Inspired by it, students and residents of Firminy took on the role of architects and urban planners and had the opportunity to experience their architectural heritage in depth over three phases: (i) UNDERSTAND – through a guided tour of Le Corbusier site, they learned about the story and history of the building and the professions of architects and urban planners; (ii) IMAGINE – inspired by old photographs, they imagined and drew the future appearance of the different neighborhoods of Firminy; (iii) CREATE – with drawings, pictures and videos sent to them by students from Murska Sobota and Vienna, they created a model of a utopian European city, as if they had been commissioned to create a new city, ideal for European children.
MURSKA SOBOTA, Slovenia
Participating school: Primary School Osnovna šola III
Mobile apps such as Tiktok are a universal and immersive medium that allows easy communication and expression of ideas, which the young people of Murska Sobota decided to use to present their city to the citizens of Firminy. The pupils of the primary school Osnovna šola III focused on buildings and places where or near which they have experienced their happiest moments, such as a first kiss, making new friends, playing with their mates. The places they showed in their videos aim to transmit these emotions to the students of Firminy, using Tiktok as a means of a common language. They also created a new model of Firminy based on drawings and photographs submitted by the Firminy pupils.
VIENNA, Austria
Participating school: Kenyongasse AHS
Since the students of Murska Sobota decided to break the boundaries of communication and project themselves into the future, the young people of Vienna decided to talk about the city of the future. Thus, they created new ministries to improve their daily lives in the Vienna of the future. Based on the common problems of everyday life, they formulated well-intentioned solutions to create prosperity, safety, cleanliness and good health in the urban space.

DISCO SCHOOL: REIMAGINING THE FUTURE OF OUR CITIES
Vienna Design Week, Vienna, Austria
What would the future of our cities look like if children were in charge? The centerpiece of the exhibition DISCO SCHOOL is a semi-fictional town plan, which draws up – and shows the vision shared by – local decision-makers, creatives, and 98 children from the town of Murska Sobota in Slovenia. To accompany the exhibition, the designers Vera Vera Karina Gebhardt Fearns, Sara Božanić and Mateja Filipović-Sandalj delivered a three-day children’s workshop during the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, in which the children developed ideas for their city with the help of storytelling, drawings, and collages.

MY NEIGHBORHOOD, MY CITY
Saint-Pierre Church, Firminy, France
Group exhibition presented on the occasion of the National Architecture Days at Saint-Pierre church, Site le Corbusier, Firminy, France took place from October 15 to 29 2021.
The idea for the exhibition My neighborhood, my city (Ma ville, mon quartier) was born at the intersection of two cities, Fimriny, France and Murska Sobota, Slovenia. The two cities are linked by a special cultural bond between the architect Le Corbusier, who worked on a project in the Firminy-Vert neighborhood, where he built a recreation centre for body and mind, while in Murska Sobota his influence is present and visible in the city centre, designed by his student Feri Novak (1906-1959).
As a testimony to these intertwined ties, the exhibition presents two projects by two groups of young people. The kids and teenagers from Firminy-Vert worked with the girls from Chic, de l’Archi !, an association whose mission is to raise awareness among young people about urban planning, architecture and landscape, on their own reflections of what they like about their neighborhood. They used photography and interviews to present how they live, use or move around it.
The kids from Murska Sobota presented Disco School, a semi-fictional town plan that aims to encourage the community to rethink the future of their city, taking into account the interests and views of children. By involving children in the process, activating their imagination and curiosity, the project stimulates their interest in living and participating in the community.

DISCO SCHOOL
MIKK Gallery, Murska Sobota Institute for Transmedia Design, Ljubljana, Slovenia
A semi-fictional town plan collaboratively produced by renowned creatives and the children from Murska Sobota, showcasing their shared vision of the city’s future.
Renowned international and local artists, musicians, and designers teamed up with local children to explore new perspectives on the city’s future.
THE PROCESS
RESEARCH – STREETS OF MURSKA SOBOTA
The research included interviews with the citizens and mapping the city and locations that were recognized as important places of social encounters. Citizens were driven around Murska Sobota in a taxi and invited to share their visions of the city, migration and social inclusion. Each of these visions depicts the experiences of individuals (locals, musicians, artists, designers, social scientists, historians, researchers), their relationships with the city, and a desire to explore what kind of future we can live in. Each story is intimate, yet collective and familiar enough that it can be shared.
ARTWORK CREATION – ELEMENTARY SCHOOL III
Inspired by the discussion about their city and under the guidance of teacher Mihaela Ružič, pupils of Elementary School III in Murska Sobota worked on various artworks centered around their hometown. A city maquette was made with over 50 pieces of ceramics, over 10 linocut prints and 10 photographs of the most striking buildings in the city designed by the famous architect Feri Novak.
WORKSHOP – FUTURE DESIGN
During a three-day workshop led by designers Jimmy Loizeau, Matt Ward and Sara Božanić, the children of Murska Sobota combined storytelling, line drawing and collages to develop ideas about a new shared vision of their town’s future. A collection of stories, images, sketches and plans were produced and then turned into 3D structures and models to help design the alternative city town plan.
MUSIC CREATION – ANTHEM OF MURSKA SOBOTA
Music has always played a big role in our society, both as a generator of social and political change, but also by shaping one’s sense of belonging and identity. A total of 21 poems were written about Murska Sobota by pupils of Elementary School III from which Music has always played a big role in our society, both as a generator of social and political change, but also by shaping one’s sense of belonging and identity. Two songs were produced using four of the poems written by pupils, and made into some kind of anthems of the future Murska Sobota, with the help of renowned local musicians kleemar and Big Pappa. The songs were recorded in a music studio with the children and then pressed into a vinyl entitled Vö Fajna!
